Independent National Commission on Human Rights Releases Liberia’s Human Rights Portfolio 2024

MONROVIA, The Independent National Commission on Human Rights (INCHR) has released findings on the country’s human rights portfolio covering 2024.

In the report, the INCHR acknowledged the Liberian Government’s efforts in the creation of a safe space for all Liberians to freely express their views on critical issues and support the Health and Education Sectors.

The INCHR Chairperson, Cllr. Dempster Brown, believes that despite gains made by the government in 2024, rape and gender-based violence incidents remain prevalent, especially cases involving minors.

Cllr. Brown, in the report, called for the elimination of harmful traditional practices, including trials by ordeal, forceful initiation, and female genital mutilation across the country.

Speaking at a news conference on Wednesday, March 26, 2025, in Sinkor, Monrovia, the INCHR Chairperson highlighted the delays by the rule of law institutions to adjudicate cases promptly and the unexplained absence of judicial officers in counties.

The INHCR is, however, proposing the adoption of legislation on legal aid to address the issue of right to counsel, and legal education, as well as criminalizing all human traditional practices, including Female Genital Mutilation.
