MONROVIA, LIBERIA-Agriculture Minister Dr. Alexander Nuetah says he inherited an agriculture sector with weak institutional capacity and inadequate technical manpower to support the country’s agricultural development.
Speaking on the Super Morning Show on Thursday, July 2, 2026, Dr. Nuetah said:” The Ministry had a limited number of technicians, district agriculture officers, and other specialists across Liberia’s 109 agriculture districts when I took office”.
He disclosed that the ministry has since increased the number of County Agriculture Coordinators from seven to fifteen coordinators.
Dr. Nuetah said: The number of livestock technicians has also increased from sixty-three to one hundred thirty-nine, but the sector requires about four hundred seventy-eighty technicians to effectively meet national needs”.
He further disclosed plans to provide incentives for some students to pursue a career in agriculture.
Minister Nuetah said the Ministry has already signed a Memorandum of Understanding with eight institutions to establish commercial farms for hands-on training.
He highlighted that plans are underway to work with the Ministry of Youth and Sports to create youth farms in all fifteen counties, providing fully equipped farms with technicians to support young farmers.
The agriculture minister was speaking Thursday, when he appeared as a guest on ELBC’s Super Morning Show.
Agriculture Minister Alexander Nuetah also disclosed a youth conference, which is being planned to engage young people in shaping the future of Liberia’s Agriculture Sector.
Meanwhile, Minister Nuetah says access to finance remains a major challenge for the Agriculture Ministry.
He said the Ministry currently has 138 technicians, but needs about 487 technicians to fully handle the activities of the Ministry of Agriculture.
