MONROVIA, LIBERIA-The House of Representatives has begun key deliberations to revise Liberia’s Mineral and Mining Law of 2000.
The review is to modernize the country’s mining legislation and ensure it reflects the current realities of Liberia’s mining and minerals sector.
The Chairman of the House Committee on Lands, Mines, Energy and Natural Resources, Representative Jeremiah Sokan, said the revision will examine mining regulatory frameworks for strategic reforms to strengthen the governance of the sector.
Representative Sokan disclosed that, as part of the review process, the committee will work closely with the Executive to consider placing a moratorium on certain mining activities to enhance regulation and accountability.
He added that the committee will also investigate the growing influx of excavators into forests and assess their environmental impact, amid increasing concerns over deforestation and other forms of environmental degradation.
