MONROVIA, LIBERIA-The Liberian Government has commissioned six hundred and fifty street lights in several communities on Bushrod Island.
Funded by the government and the World Bank, the solar light project is estimated at 1.17 million United States dollars.
The project covers 13.5 kilometers of roads in Logan Town, Jamaica Road, Doe Community, Clara Town, Banjor and Mombo Town.
Speaking at the commissioning in Doe Community on Wednesday, Deputy Public Works Minister Samuka Dunnoh said the street lights will make the communities safer and improve economic activities.
Minister Dunnoh also called on community residents to take ownership of the street lights.
Meanwhile, Montserrado County Administrative Officer Sylvester Lamah thanked the Public Works Ministry and the World Bank for undertaking such a meaningful project in Liberia.
Lamah assured the Public Works Ministry Authorities that the residents of the various communities will take ownership of streetlights.
He assured residents of their commitment to maintaining the streetlights to safeguard their respective communities.
Lamah also appealed to the Public Works Ministry to extend a similar project to other parts of Montserrado County, mainly Bensonville, which is the County’s Capital.
The solar streetlights initiative in the various communities on Bushrod Island is part of the World Bank 40 million United States Dollars Liberia Urban Resilience Project (LURP).
