EPA Calls for Full Approach to Tackle Growing Challenges of Illegal Mining

MONROVIA, LIBERIA-The Executive Director of the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), Dr. Emmanuel Yarkpawolo, is calling for a whole-of-government approach to tackle the growing challenge of illegal mining activities across Liberia.

Dr. Yarkpawolo said,” Several mining companies remain major violators of environmental regulations, emphasizing the need for stronger policies and tougher enforcement measures to properly regulate the sector”.

He disclosed that several mining operators are currently carrying out activities without the required environmental permits and authorizations.

Speaking on Monday, May 25, 2026, on ELBC’s Super Morning Show, the EPA Executive Director revealed that recent nationwide monitoring and compliance exercises conducted by the agency have led to the closure of several illegal mining sites across the country.

Dr. Yarkpawolo further described the illegal use of excavators and dredges as a serious concern requiring urgent government intervention.
