FAO Donates to University of Liberia College of Agriculture

MONROVIA, LIBERIA-The Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) has donated essential materials valued at over thirteen thousand US dollars to the University of Liberia’s (UL) College of Agriculture and Forestry.

The items include computers, laboratory equipment, whiteboards, and projectors, among others, to support the establishment of a Para-Veterinary Diploma Program.

They are intended to enhance the program’s capabilities in training the next generation of veterinary para-professionals in Liberia.

Speaking on Tuesday, January 21, 2025, FAO Head of Animal Program, Edward Quirmolue, stressed the strong collaboration between the entity, USAID, the Agriculture Ministry, and the UL.

Mr. Quirmolue said:” The initiative is to strengthen Liberia’s animal health system and improve food security to address the critical shortage of veterinary para-professionals.”

Meanwhile, UL President Layli Maparyan emphasized the importance of the country’s agricultural and veterinary education.

Dr. Maparyan said:” The program would provide practical skills critical to the growth of Liberia’s livestock and farming sectors.

She praised all the stakeholders, including the FAO, USAID, and the Agriculture Ministry, for their support in advancing agricultural education in Liberia.

Dr. Maparyan also urged students to seize the opportunity and become agents of change, benefiting both their careers and their communities.

Also speaking, Deputy Agriculture Minister for Technical Services, Solomon Hedd-Williams, stressed the critical need for collaborative efforts to tackle food security, enhance animal health, and empower local economies.

Minister Williams said:” The partnership demonstrates the capabilities of the UL and reflects the transformative power of education.”
