MONROVIA, LIBERIA-Liberia and Ghana have entered into an agreement to combat illegal fishing activities.

It followed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the Governments of both countries.

The National Fisheries and Aquaculture and Authority and the Liberia Maritime Authority signed for the Liberian Government, while the Ministry of Fisheries and Aqua culture signed on behalf of the Ghanaian Government.

According to a dispatch from Ghana, the purpose of the MoU is to promote cooperation in fisheries inspection, ensure effective administration, and control over flagged fishing, among others.

The measure is to promote fishing related ships of the Parties, while respecting their respective national laws and regulations, as well as international conventions to prevent, deter and eliminate illegal, unreported and unregulated (IUU) fishing. Through the framework of the MoU, both countries will cooperate in the areas of harmonized inspectorate regime, joint inspection exercises of fishing related vessels, as well as exchange of information on monitoring, control and surveillance.
