US Gov’t stands ready to support War and Economic Crimes Court in Liberia

MONROVIA, LIBERIA-The United States Government says it is fully ready to provide technical and financial assistance to Liberia, for the establishment of a war and economic crimes court.

US Ambassador Michael McCarthy told ELBC on Thursday that his Country stands ready to support a decision taken by Liberians, through their leaders, to set-up the court.

However, Ambassador McCarthy stated that such support is only possible if Liberians are intentional about ending the culture of impunity.

Ambassador Michael McCarthy stated that impunity, becoming a norm, worries the United States Government about the future of Liberia.

He said while Liberia lag behind in establishing war crime court, his Country is currently supporting accountability and justice for war victims.

According to him, the mechanism to begin prosecuting war criminals must come from Liberia in order to generate the necessary support from international partners.
