MONROVIA, LIBERIA-The Standard Bearer of the opposition Unity Party, Joseph Boakai, says Liberian workers deserve better incentives and protection against all forms of discrimination.

Ambassador Boakai said especially people living with disabilities and females must be fairly and justly treated at the workplace.

He argued that no worker must suffer discrimination at the workplace because of sex, religion and their physical condition.

The former Vice President said:” Religious discrimination, sexual harassment and salary disparity should no longer be tolerated at the workplace.”

He spoke Monday, May 2, 2022, during program marking International Workers Day held at the Liberian Labor Congress in Gardnerville.

Ambassador Boakai emphasized the need to improve on current labor law, and ensure its scrupulous implementation in the interest of ordinary workers, especially people living with disabilities.

At the same time, the President of the Liberia Labor Congress, Moibah Johnson, has renewed calls to have one labor law for Liberian workers.

Mr. Moibah said:” This can be done when the Decent Work Act and the Civil Servant Law are synchronized into a package.”

He said unlike Liberia, universally, workers are guided by one labor law which allows then to unionize.

He assured that the Congress will do everything to unite Liberian workers, in fighting for their rights to conducive working environment and better incentives.

Mr. Johnson encouraged Liberian workers to be peaceful in the face of temptation, by seeking the relevant redress to their grievances.

In a related development, Labor Minister Charles Gibson has congratulated Liberian workers on the occasion marking International Labor Day.

The first of May, every year, is celebrated as International Labor Day, and an opportunity to advance labor solidarity to promote and protect the interest of workers.

In a statement released, Cllr. Gibson expressed sadness over the continued leadership bickering within the Labor Congress, the umbrella organization for workers.

The Labor Minister said:” The situation has brought great imbalance to the National Tripartite Council, which consists of employees, employers and the Liberian Government.”

He said the peaceful transition of leadership in the Liberia Labor Congress is crucial for smooth collaboration among partners.

According to him, the Liberian Government, through the Labor Ministry, is committed to working with the leadership to be confirmed by the court, soon.

The Labor Minister then assured Liberian Workers of Government continuous protection.
