MONROVIA, LIBERIA-The United States Ambassador to Liberia has called for a collective action to achieve commitments made by President George Weah, at the recent Summit for Democracy that was convened by US President Joe Biden.

Among other things, Ambassador Michael McCarthy said:” The Liberian Leader committed to fighting corruption, supporting transparency and accountability in election funding, and ensuring an end to all harmful traditional practices.”

During a roundtable media engagement at the US Embassy on Tuesday, February 8, 2022, Ambassador McCarthy said it would take the collective effort of Government and Civil Society, including the media for those commitments to be met.

He stated that the benchmark for Heads of State to attend the 2022 Summit for Democracy is dependent on those commitments.

Ambassador McCarthy hailed the National Legislature for taking steps to make public legislative votes, especially on critical issues, which according to him, was one of the commitments made by the President.

Meanwhile, Ambassador McCarthy said President Biden is committed to supporting free and independent media, the fight against corruption, democratic reforms and defense for free and fair elections and political process, among others.

At the same time, the Michigan National Guard of the United States has acknowledged the professional capability and mentality of the Armed Forces of Liberia (AFL).

The acknowledgement was contained in a special remark delivered by Major General Paul Rogers, Adjutant General of the Michigan Army and Air Guard, at the roundtable media engagement.

Major General Rogers said:” The AFL is equipped with professional group of men and women committed to the defense and support to the Country and citizens.”

According to him, not only are the AFL service men and women committed to the defense of Liberia, they also have a distinct interest in peacekeeping operations in West Africa.

Major General Paul Rogers said it is against those backdrops the Michigan Army and Air Guard remained committed to the partnership with the AFL since 2009.

According to him, the partnership is geared towards improving the AFL’s capabilities, by regularly exchanging best practices and providing opportunities.
