Calm returns to Lofa County after violent protests…..

LOFA COUNTY, LIBERIA-Calm has returned to Lofa County, after a day of protests across major cities in the County.

The protestors have been demanding the certification of Senator-elect, Brownie Samukai, who is still facing some legal challenges, after being convicted of corruption.

Lofa County Superintendent William Kamba told ELBC Thursday, July 29, 2021, that Voinjama, Zorzor and Foya are all calmed, following hours of violent protests.

On Thursday morning, the protestors locked the main entrance to the Administrative Building in Voinjama, demanding the immediate certification of Mr. Samukai.

Superintendent Kamba said:” The protestors’ actions were unlawful, because they did not seek permission from the Justice Ministry, and the certification of Senator-elect, Samukai, is issue to be decided by the courts, which authorities have no control over.”

Mr. Samukai and others were found guilty by Criminal Court “C” for misapplying the Armed Forces Liberia (AFL) Pension Fund of one-point-four-million United States Dollars, a ruling that was later upheld by the Supreme Court of Liberia.
