MONTSERRADO COUNTY, LIBERIA-The Ministry of Justice has spoken of plans to construct a new prison in Cheesmanburg, Rural Montserrado County, to ease congestion at the Monrovia Central Prison.
The plan follows the government of Liberia’s acquisition of about seven acres of land in Cheesmanburg for the project.
Speaking at the Executive Budget Hearing with the Security Sector, Acting Justice Minister, Cllr. Betty Lamin-Blamo, said:” The project has progressed with about seventy percent of the work completed”.
Cllr. Lamin-Blamo explained that the new prison will provide additional space as the government works to address congestion at the Monrovia Central Prison.
The Attorney General of Liberia also reported that the correctional center in Buchanan has reached full completion.
Meanwhile, the Justice Ministry is promoting probation and parole services across several counties to provide alternatives to imprisonment.
