MONROVIA, LIBERIA-Education Minister, Dr. Jarso Jallah, says Liberia is working to strengthen the teaching profession as part of efforts to improve education across the country.

Speaking at the ongoing AFTRA Executive Meeting in Congo Town, Dr. Jallah said every parent should have confidence in the person entrusted with educating their children.

She said,” Teachers must be properly prepared, guided by professional standards, and given opportunities to continue developing their skills after entering the classroom”.

Dr. Jallah said Liberia is addressing challenges including teacher shortages, qualification gaps, retention, deployment, professional development, and accountability within the teaching workforce.

She said the AFTRA meeting provides Liberia with an opportunity to learn from other African countries while developing approaches that respond to the country’s own education needs.

The President of the African Federation of Teaching Regulatory Authorities (AFTRA), Abie Mubanga, has described Liberia’s commitment, consistency, and growing efforts to strengthen the teaching profession as influencing the decision to select the country to host the federation’s 2027 continental conference.

Mubanga said,” The conference will bring about four hundred delegates, including ministers and education professionals from across Africa”.

He said key partners, including the African Union, UNESCO, Education International, and Commonwealth of Learning, are also expected to participate.

The AFTRA President told an ELBC interview on Wednesday, September 9, 2026, that his organization’s executive meeting has confirmed Liberia’s readiness, with preparations covering the venue, accommodation, security, conference agenda, and participation.

He said hosting the conference will provide Liberia an opportunity to promote education, tourism, and investment while showcasing the country’s growing commitment to the teaching profession.
