Liberia has launched a female recruitment exercise in Fish Town, River Gee County, as part of efforts to increase the representation of women within the military.

The initiative is targeting at least 15 to 20 percent female representation within the Armed Forces of Liberia.

The move is designed to promote gender balance and enable women to serve alongside their male counterparts in defending the nation.

Our correspondent quotes AFL Gender Focal Person, Sergeant Patricia Lincoln, as saying that the army currently has only 7.4 percent active female representation.

Sergeant Lincoln further noted that due to the critical roles female officers have played in peacekeeping missions, UN Women has pledged its support to the AFL in accelerating the recruitment of more women into the armed forces.
