MONROVIA, LIBERIA – The Office of the President, in coordination with the Ministry of State and the Liberian Board for Nursing and Midwifery (LBNM), has commenced the rollout of a targeted ‘Special Presidential Project’ delivering essential midwifery kits to health facilities and frontline birth attendants nationwide.
The initiative directly equips both skilled clinical staff and Trained Traditional Midwives (TTMs) with the critical tools required for safe, respectful, and hygienic delivery services.
By strengthening the frontlines of maternal care, the project underscores the government’s unwavering commitment to improving health outcomes for women and children in every county.
Clinical Kits for Public Clinics
Under the first phase of the project, 133 public clinics across seven counties, Grand Gedeh, Grand Kru, Grand Bassa, Grand Cape Mount, Sinoe, Bomi, and Margibi, will receive comprehensive medical delivery kits.
Each package is meticulously assembled to support sterile and safe childbirth, containing:
· Scissors for umbilical cord cutting
· Hemostatic forceps
· Artery forceps
· Cord clamps
· Kidney basins
· Surgical trays
· Examination gloves
These supplies are fundamental to ensuring that every delivery is managed with the highest standards of hygiene and clinical precision, significantly reducing the risk of infection and complications.
Empowering Traditional Midwives
Recognizing the indispensable role of Traditional Midwives in remote and underserved communities, the project further provides 1,000 TTMs from the catchment areas of the targeted clinics with tailored support packages. Each TTM kit includes:
· A durable backpack
· A traditional lappa suit
· A cash gift envelope
· Hand sanitizer
· Headlights for nighttime deliveries
This support package is designed to enhance the mobility, visibility, and efficiency of TTMs, who remain vital liaisons between rural communities and the formal health system, particularly in hard-to-reach regions where access to clinics is limited.
A Presidential Vision for Safer Motherhood
This comprehensive intervention reflects President Joseph Boakai’s steadfast resolve to eliminate preventable deaths during childbirth. By bridging resource gaps and reinforcing the capacities of both professional midwives and traditional attendants, the project ensures that every mother and newborn receives timely, quality care and prompt referrals when needed.
The initiative also exemplifies robust inter-agency collaboration, bringing together the Ministry of Health, the LBNM, and the Ministry of State in a unified effort to safeguard the lives of Liberia’s most vulnerable citizens.
With distribution now underway, the government reiterates its pledge to leave no community behind in the pursuit of a healthier, stronger Liberia.
