Four Senators Request Liberian Senate’s Intervention in Proposed Cities, Townships, Boroughs Dissolution

MONROVIA, LIBERIA-Four Senators have craved the Liberian Senate’s intervention regarding proposed dissolution of cities, townships and boroughs that do not meet population and infrastructure thresholds.

The Senators, including Albert Chie, Augustine Chea, Numene Bartekwa, and Crayton Duncan from Grand Kru and Sinoe Counties, said the dissolution of certain cities is being contemplated by the Local Government Ministry.

They noted that while certain cities to do not meet the prescribed threshold under Section 2.16 C and D of the Local Government Act, it requires that the Minister’s first report to the National Legislature on their status for reaffirmation.

The Senators added that in the absence of compliance with the statutory prerequisite, any attempt by the ministry would be inconsistent with the requirements of the Act.

Meanwhile, the Senators have called for the appearance of the Minister of Local Government to explain whether the mandatory report required under the Act has been prepared and submitted to the National Legislature.
