MONROVIA, LIBERIA-The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has fined Bea Mountain Mining Corporation fifty thousand U.S dollars for unauthorized sand mining in the Lofa River in Grand Cape Mount County.
A recent investigation conducted by the EPA established that industrial-scale extraction was carried out using excavators and heavy-duty trucks, with fifty percent of the river channel being obstructed.
According to EPA Executive Director, Dr. Emmanuel Yarkpawolo, an additional twenty thousand U.S dollars was issued in restoration and monitoring fees to the company.
Dr. Yarkpawolo said,” The Company is fully responsible for the environmental damage caused and has been ordered to rehabilitate the affected river system.
The EPA boss also warned that no activities in natural waterways are allowed without proper approval.
Meanwhile, the EPA has confirmed that Sethi Brothers Company has relocated its paint and plastic storage facility to the Monrovia Industrial Complex, reducing the risk to nearby residents.
This followed the December 2025 fire explosion at the Sethi Brothers Duraplast Paint Warehouse in the Iron Factory Community.
Dr. Yarkpawolo emphasized that the move is critical for safer handling of hazardous materials, while stressing that cleanup efforts are also underway.
He noted that the Company has begun supporting affected residents with building materials and water system repairs, though medical care for those exposed to toxic fumes remains outstanding.
The Environmental Protection Agency boss says it will continue to monitor compliance and enforce environmental safety standards.
