MONROVIA, LIBERIA-The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) has opened its 2nd Meeting of ECOWAS State Media Directors-General in Cotonou, Benin.
The Liberia Broadcasting System (LBS) is represented by its Deputy Director General of Public Affairs, Alexander Amnon.
In an ELBC interview on Tuesday, March 3, 2026, Madam Amnon said,” The meeting seeks to strengthen the partnership between ECOWAS and the State Broadcaster in the fight against disinformation and misinformation”.
The LBS Deputy Director General for Public Affairs stated that the meeting is galvanizing support from state-owned media to create visibility on ECOWAS activities.
Meanwhile, Alexander Amnon said,” The regional bloc has praised LBS Management’s commitment to avail its Language Radio for the promotion of democracy in West Africa”.
At the same time, the Senior Advisor on Communication to the President of ECOWAS Commission, Abdoulle Gassama, has called on state-owned media across West Africa to take the lead in combating misinformation and disinformation.
Gassama said,” Regional achievements in peacekeeping, trade, free movement, democratic governance, and humanitarian intervention could erode if nothing is done to cleanse the public space”.
He warned that misinformation and disinformation, particularly on digital platforms, have widened this gap between ECOWAS’s action and public perception, fueling mistrust and false narratives across the region.
For her part, the Chair of the Administration and Finance Committee of ECOWAS said,” The body’s achievements remain poorly known or misrepresented”.
Madam Laygbay Lillian Amadu highlighted the growing threat of misinformation and disinformation on digital platforms, which undermines trust and weakens institutional credibility.
She described state-owned media as essential partners in providing balanced, accurate, and contextualized information to citizens.
