“By 2029, Liberia will, for the first time, have a paved road from Monrovia to Harper City, in Maryland County”-Minister Giddings

MONROVIA, LIBERIA-The Minister of Public Works, Roland Giddings, says by 2029 Liberia will, for the first time, have a paved road from Monrovia to Harper City, in Maryland County.

Minister Giddings said,” The government is confident about the projected timeline because the different road projects from Nimba County to the southeast are progressing”.

The Public Works Minister told an interview on Tuesday, November 11, 2025, that the pavement of the road from Ganta to Tappita, in Nimba County, will be completed in the next one year, six months.

He noted that the 40-kilometer road from Tappita to Toe Town in Grand Gedeh County will begin before the next Rainy Season.

Minister Giddings disclosed that the procurement process for the 85-kilometer road from Toe Town to Zwedru in Grand Gedeh County is nearing completion, while maintenance of roads that do not have contractors will continue.

At the same time, the Public Works Minister said,” The recommendations for the government to cancel all contracts with MDNC of indicted owner, John Youboty, must be carefully reviewed by the Cabinet”.

While reading an indictment against Youboty on Friday, November 7, 2025, the Chairman of the Asset Recovery and Property Retrieval Taskforce, Cllr. Edwin Kla Martin urged the government to cancel all contracts with MDMC.

In a radio interview on Tuesday, November 11, 2025, Minister Giddings said all existing contracts with the company, especially in road, are legally binding.

The Public Works Minister admitted that the MDMC is the only Liberian construction company that has the capacity to do asphalt pavement.

Minister Roland Giddings stated that while the Ministry of Public Works applauds the work of the Asset Recovery and Property Retrieval Taskforce, it will continue to honor the contracts with MDMC until a decision is made.
