Executive Submits Crucial Bill to Ban Harmful Cultural Practices

MONROVIA, LIBERIA-The Executive has submitted to the National Legislature a crucial bill to ban harmful cultural practices in Liberia.

When passed, the proposed legislation will protect the dignity, rights, and health of all, especially women, young girls, and children.

The bill, among other provisions, prohibits female genital mutilation (FGM), child marriage, and other harmful traditional and cultural practices.

It also establishes penalties for violations, provides support and protection services for victims, and ensures robust monitoring and enforcement mechanisms.

President Joseph Boakai noted that banning harmful cultural practices reaffirms Liberia’s commitment to upholding international treaties.

Meanwhile, the House of Representatives Committees on Gender, Health, Internal Affairs, and Judiciary have been mandated to scrutinize the instrument and report to the plenary in two weeks.
