House’s Committee Chair on Human and Civil Rights Recommits to Upholding Int’l Human Rights Standards…

MONROVIA, LIBERIA-The Chairman of the Committee on Human and Civil Rights at the House of Representatives has reaffirmed Liberia’s commitment to upholding international human rights standards and enhancing transparency within the justice and corrections systems.

Representative Emmanuel Yarh committed on Tuesday, September 16, 2025, during a courtesy visit by the United Nations Sub-committee on the Prevention of Torture (SPT), at the National Legislature in Monrovia.

The meeting was part of the SPT’s mission to assess Liberia’s efforts in preventing torture and other ill-treatment in detention facilities, under its obligations to the Optional Protocol to the Convention against Torture.

During the visit, the SPT delegation and Representative Yarh had constructive discussions on Liberia’s legal and institutional frameworks for human rights protection, torture prevention, and strengthening national monitoring mechanisms for detention facilities.

Meanwhile, Representative Yarh also expressed the government’s willingness to fully cooperate with the SPT and other international partners to advance reforms and promote the rule of law.
