Sports: Spartacus Set Record In Liberian Basketball

Newly promoted 1st Division Spartacus Basketball Club Friday made history in the Liberia Basketball Association Championship chase with the biggest points score ever recorded in the Liberian Basketball league.

Spartacus, coached by the only female basketball coach in the country, Friday demolished fellow newcomers to the 1st division, Bardnersville Dragon 111-38 points at the SKD gym in Paynesville City.

That scoreline is the biggest win by a Liberian basketball club in any of the LBA competitions.

The Spartacus did that in style, dominating their opponents in the entire match, winning them in all four quarters.

They got the match off to an entertaining start, netting in ten points in five minutes, something that is difficult for most Liberian basketball clubs.

With the shots landing perfectly in the basket, the Spartacus coach, Walley Barr, got more inspiration to push her players on.

And they did execute her orders rightly, breaking LPRC Oilers’ long-year records of 93 points in a single match.

The scoreline added colours to the sports headlines at the weekend in Liberia, as not many thought a young team like the Spartacus, who are having their first experience in the top division, could become the first team to score 100 points in a single game in the LBA.

Friday’s win boosts Spartacus’s hope of a playoff in the first division, thereby challenging in earnest for the Division One title.

Their 111-38 points victory followed their weekend’s shock win over title favorites Bushrod Bulls.

Spartacus have won four games in five this season in the first division.

Their performance so far is drawing them fans, as many people who thirst for sweet basketball are moving their way, leaving their own clubs that are not performing well.

The Spartacus Coach Walley Baar, popularly known in the Liberian Basketball circle as DDA, was filled with the biggest smile and excitement in the gym after that record-winning result.

She praised the resilience of her young players, but was quick to caution them that they had not gone anywhere.

“This is a fantastic record for the young players and the club. It only proves that hard work pays. We are not going to be carried away by this, but we will take the result as just one victory,” Coach Baar told reporters while smiling.

She added, “People can now consider us as a serious team and not underdogs”.

with the way they are taking their game, it will not surprise many when Spartacus get themselves in the playoffs and even the final ahead of some the the giant clubs.

The Spartacus have already beaten the defending champions Mighty Barrolle on their way to where they have reached this season.
