UMC Bishop Quire Says Annual Conference Will Not Conduct Weddings of Self-avowed Practicing Homosexuals

MONROVIA, LIBERIA-The Bishop of the United Methodist Church, Samuel Quire, says the Liberia Annual Conference will not conduct any weddings or ordinations of self-avowed practicing homosexuals.

Bishop Quire, in a statement, said:” The Liberia Annual Conference of the Church is traditional in its interpretations of the Holy Scriptures, and will continue its evangelistic outreach to all persons”.

On the issue about what transpired at the General Conference, Bishop Quire noted that it was voted to remove language in the United Methodist Church Book of Discipline prohibiting marriage and ordination of self-avowed and practicing homosexuals in the Church effective following the close of the General Conference on May 3, 2024.

He said:” The General Conference also approved a plan of regionalization for UMC, which will take effect upon ratification of the Annual Conferences of the UMC, the two decisions of the Conference have caused lot of confusion and misleading messages.”

Addressing the issue of regionalization, Bishop Quire said,” The conference seeks to amend the structure of the Church, empowers churches across the world to make ministry and mission decisions appropriate in their context to be more relevant and effective.”

He said that once the plan is ratified across the annual conferences around the world, the Council of Bishops will announce the results to take effect.

The purpose of the bishop’s statement is to set the records straight about what happened at the General Conference and how the Methodist Church will be operated in Liberia.
