Independent Nat’l Com. on Human Rights Supports War, Economic Crimes Court Establishment…

MONROVIA, LIBERIA-The Independent National Commission on Human Rights (INCHR) has expressed its unwavering support for the establishment of a War and Economic Crimes Court is done smoothly.

In a statement released on Thursday, March 7, 2024, the INCHR urged the National Legislature to consider an open discussion on a War and Economic Crimes Court Draft Act submitted before the House of Representatives in 2022.

The INCHR also wants the Office of the President to initiate discussion with the United Nations, the United States Government, and partners to support the process through technical and financial resources.

The statement recommended that the INCHR be provided the necessary support to carry out the memorization, palava hut hearing processes, and get input from citizens on the issue of criminal accountability.

At the same time, the Chairperson of the INCHR, Cllr. Dempster Brown has clarified that the Accra Peace Agreement did not grant amnesty to any warlord.

Cllr. Brown said: “Warlords at the Accra Conference requested the establishment of a True and Reconciliation Commission which recommended criminal accountability for the Liberian Civil War.”

The INCHR Chairperson stressed that Liberia is a signatory to the Geneva Convention that prohibits amnesty to individuals who committed crimes against humanity.

According to Cllr. Brown, Liberia is also a signatory of the Vienna Treaty which prohibits clemency to anyone who goes against international law.

Cllr. Dempster Brown said:” Liberia is a signatory to several international conventions, treaties, and protocols on human rights, making the Country obligated to trial individuals that killed others without cause.”
