MONROVIA, LIBERIA-The Government of Japan has donated a huge consignment of rice to Liberia under its 2025 Food Assistance Program.
The donation is intended to support Liberia’s food security efforts and strengthen local agriculture.
Japanese Ambassador to Liberia, Hiroshi Yoshimoto, reaffirmed his country’s commitment to supporting Liberia’s food security and agricultural development.
He also disclosed that Japan has begun processing its 2026 Food Assistance Program following the signing of an exchange of notes agreement.
Ambassador Yoshimoto made the remarks on Monday, November 2, 2026, at the official handover of the FA2024 Japanese Rice Donation at the Ministry of Commerce and Industry in Monrovia.
Meanwhile, the Acting Minister of Commerce and Industry, Stephen Yekeson, said:” Falling rice prices have affected the monetization of Japan’s rice donations to Liberia”.
Minister Yekeson said the price changes have made it difficult to match sales proceeds with agreed prices, prompting the government to seek adjustment from Japan.
According to Minister Yekeson, proceeds from the sale of the 2,929.02 metric tons of rice will be deposited at the Central Bank of Liberia for development projects.
Commerce Minister Stephen Yekeson also disclosed that another consignment is on the way to Liberia, with expectations of smoother monetization.
