MONROVIA, LIBERIA-Nobel Peace Laureate Laymah Gbowee has proposed the enactment of legislation to declare August 18 of each year as National Peace Day.
Madam Gbowee said:” If enacted into law, the day will serve as a reminder to Liberians and a recognition of the Accra Peace Accord signed in 2003 by warring factions to restore sanity after the country’s 14-year civil conflict”.
Speaking in an interview over the weekend, the Nobel Peace Laureate disclosed that she had briefed President Joseph Boakai about the proposed legislation on the sidelines of the just-ended United Nations General Assembly.
Madam Gbowee said several institutions have joined the advocacy and endorsed the proposed legislation by affixing their signatures to the initiative.
She also disclosed that the proposed bill is expected to be presented to President Joseph Boakai as part of efforts to seek the government of Liberia’s support.
