Nat’l Debate Ensues on Appointments to Tenure Position

MONROVIA, LIBERIA-National debate surrounding the appointments of individuals to tenured positions has deepened, with the Center for Transparency and Accountability in Liberia, calling for due process.

Recently, President Joseph Boakai appointed several individuals to tenured institutions like the Liberia Telecommunications Authority, Governance Commission, and National Lottery Authority, among others.

Following the appointments, Presidential Legal Advisor, Cllr. Bushuben Keita justified the appointments by the President to Article 56 (a) of the Liberian Constitution and alleged violation of the Code of Conduct by some tenured officers.

But in an interview on the Super Morning Show on Monday, February 26, 2024, CENTAL Program Manager, Atty. Gerald Yeakula urged the President to withdraw the nominations and establish the office of the Ombudsman to ensure due process as enshrined in the Code of Conduct.

Atty. Yeakula said:” Under the Code of Conduct, those affected by the President’s appointment have the right to due process to discover cause for their removal.”

He then called for a holistic review of the Constitution to discover and address some of the loopholes being taken advantage of for political reasons.
