Pres. Boakai Mandates Audit of Key Gov. Institutions

MONROVIA, LIBERIA-President Joseph Boakai has mandated the General Auditing Commission (GAC) to conduct comprehensive audits of three key Government institutions.

They are the Central Bank of Liberia (CBL), the National Security Agency (NSA), and the Executive Protection Service (EPS).

In a recent communication to the Auditor General of the GAC, President Boakai directed the audit to cover the period between 2018 to 2023, with findings being reported in three months.

According to an Executive Mansion release issued, the audit period spans the six-year stewardship of the former Government of Liberia, which President Boakai promised to audit as President.

The release said:” The audit of the three Government institutions marks the beginning of a holistic audit of Government ministries and agencies, in keeping with the President’s commitment to fighting corruption.”

Meanwhile, President Boakai said:” The audit of the CBL is to determine the actual amount left in the Consolidated Account of the Government of Liberia.”

During his Annual Message, President Boakai announced that what his predecessors reported on the state of the Country’s financial standing at the CBL was far from reality based on documentary records, and re-emphasized the need to audit the CBL and other agencies.

Former President George Weah had reported that forty million US dollars was left in the Consolidated Accounts of the Government of Liberia, while President Boakai, in his State of the Nation Address, reported twenty-point-five million USD.

The release re-emphasized President Boakai’s earlier commitment to audit, and ensure that regular audits be a culture across all branches of Government, not only the Executive.

The release said it will be the first time in years that the EPS and NSA, two security entities that receive budgetary allocations, are being audited.
