Pres. Weah Issues Executive Pardon to One Hundred-One Convicts…

MONROVIA, LIBERIA-President George Weah has issued Executive Pardon to one hundred-one convicts detained at various prison facilities across the country.

The Presidential Pardon is consistent with Article 59 of the Liberian Constitution.

Article 59 states that the President may remit and public forfeiture and penalties, suspend any fines and sentences, grant reprieves and pardons, and restore civil rights after conviction for all public offenses, except impeachment.

The President has mandated Justice Minister and Attorney General of the Republic of Liberia, Cllr. Musa Dean, to ensure the unhindered implementation of the Presidential Pardon, in keeping with judicial procedures.

A MICAT release issued recently said notable among the one hundred-one pardoned individuals are former Defense Minister Brownie Samukai, former Deputy Defense Minister for Administration, Joseph Johnson, and former Defense Comptroller, Nyumah Dorkor.

According to MICAT, the pardoned former Defense Officials are also relieved of their legal obligations to refund to the Government of Liberia money they were convicted of misappropriating while serving in their respective capacities at the Ministry of National Defense.

The Presidential Pardon also includes individuals who are convicted of committing minor offenses by courts and serving various prison terms, among others.
