Former Unity Party Poised to Regain State Power

MONROVIA, LIBERIA-Former ruling Unity Party (UP) is poised to regain state power, after accumulating the highest votes in the just-ended Presidential Run-Off Election.

UP Standard Bearer Joseph Boakai accumulated 50.64 percent of the votes, while President George Weah of the Congress for Democratic Change (CDC) obtained 49.36 percent of the votes.

The National Elections Commission has released 99.98 percent of the total consolidated results.

Ambassador Boakai and President Weah were declared eligible by the NEC to participate in the run-off election in keeping with Article 83 (b) of the Liberian Constitution.

In 2007, Ambassador Boakai of the UP suffered a defeat from incumbent President, George Weah, in a Presidential Run-Off Election.

At the same time, Ambassador Boakai has refuted a purported statement linking him to a policy statement on how he intends to run the Unity Party-led Administration.

The purported social media post is linking Ambassador Boakai to plans by his administration to prosecute corrupt past government officials.

However, a statement from the Office of Ambassador Boakai has clarified that it has not issued any policy statement of such nature.

The UP Standard Bearer described such a statement as divisive and one intended to sow seeds of disharmony among the citizenry.

The Office of the Unity Party Standard Bearer, however, said it recognizes the authority of President George Weah which is still in effect and protected by the Liberian Constitution.
