Women Organizations Express Concerns over Low Level Women Aspirants…

MONROVIA, LIBERIA-Several women’s organizations have expressed serious concerns over the low level of women aspirants vying for various legislative seats in the country.

The organizations include Rural Women, Market Women, and National Women groups, among others.

The organizations noted that a recent update released by the National Elections Commission (NEC) suggests that out of five hundred fifty-five aspirants who have registered at the NEC, only eighty-five are women.

In their petition to the Commission, two officials of the group, Hawa Jembell, and Beatrice Newland, called on the NEC to hold all political parties that have signed the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU).

The group maintained that all registered political parties that have signed the MoU with the National Elections Commission commit themselves to supporting not less than thirty-percent women on their respective tickets, but they are yet to do so.
