“Public Confidence a Good Recipe for Nat’l Elections”-Mr. Jonathan

The Head of the ECOWAS Elder Forum, Good-luck Jonathan, has described public confidence in electoral management bodies and state security as good recipes for national elections.

Mr. Jonathan said:” The two institutions are key in attracting citizens’ support and participation.”

He said their partial role will build public confidence in revealing that elections were free, fair, transparent, and credible.

The former Nigerian President spoke on Wednesday, July 12, 2023, when a delegation from the ECOWAS Elder Forum paid a courtesy visit to the Board of Commissioners of the National Elections Commission at its Headquarters in Monrovia.

Mr. Jonathan disclosed that the delegation was in Liberia to hold discussions with the NEC and other relevant institutions ahead of the 2023 October 10 Presidential and Legislative Elections.

Meanwhile, the NEC-Liberia Chairperson, Davidetta Browne-Lansanah, informed the ECOWAS Elder Forum Delegation that the NEC is prepared to conduct the 2023 Elections.

Madam Browne-Lansanah recounted some of the processes the NEC has conducted so far in line with its guidelines, signifying that it is on track for the October 10 process.

She disclosed that the Commission successfully conducted Liberia’s first Biometric Voter Registration (BVR), including the nationwide exhibition of the Provisional BVR Roll.

Madam Browne-Lansanah also spoke of the ongoing Candidate Nomination exercise expected to come in the coming days.

Madam Davidetta Browne-Lansanah said the National Elections Commission and the Finance Ministry are working together to ensure that the needed funds are provided to the Commission for the conduct of the 2023 October 10 Presidential and Legislative Elections.
