LOWER MARGIBI COUNTY, LIBERIA-President George Weah has challenged political actors, civil society organizations and the media to be advocates of peace during the current electioneering period.

President Weah said:” Upholding the tenets of democracy depend on the collective efforts of all citizens, irrespective of status or political affiliations.”

The Liberian Leader noted that the Country’s democratic space continues to be strengthened, as evidenced by the cooperation of all to the maintenance of peace.

He spoke on Tuesday, April 4, 2023, at the signing ceremony of the Farmington Declaration Document in Lower Margibi County.

President Weah described the signing of the document as a milestone achievement in the Country’s preparedness to conducting free, fair, transparent and credible elections.

The document is intended to hold political parties accountable for the commission of orchestrated acts of violence during the electoral processes.

Meanwhile, the Acting Head of the United Nations (UN) Office for West Africa and the Sahel, Giovonie Biha, said:” The signing of the Farmington Declaration shows the collective determination by political parties to preserve Liberia’s quest for national unity.”

Ms. Biha said:” The document also signals to Africa and the rest of the world the Country’s commitment to conduct peaceful, credible, inclusive and transparent elections.”

She said that it further shows the Country’s political leaders are committed to promoting good governance, with the participation of all Liberians.

Meanwhile, the National Elections Chairperson, Davidetta Browne-Lansanah, described the signing of the revised document as a milestone to hold violence-free election in October this year.

In a related development, a young Liberian, Alpha Faith Kemokai, has spoken of the high-level of militancy being organized at various political parties.

Ms. Kemokai said:” Militancy at various parties are young people constantly used to carry out violence orchestrated by political actors.”

She also called on Journalists to be credible in their reportage as their role in the electoral process of Liberia is crucial.
