Pres. Weah Reaffirms Gov.’s Commitment to Defending Democracy…..

MONROVIA, LIBERIA-President George Weah has reiterated his Government’s commitment to the defense of democracy, the fight against corruption and the promotion of human rights and good governance in Liberia.

President Weah said:” Immense progress has been made in enhancing Liberia’s competitive democratic space.”

The Liberian Leader named a landmark anti-corruption law, which he says gives greater independence and autonomy to existing anti-corruption agencies.

President Weah made the statement Thursday, March 30, 2023, when he virtually joined other world leaders and champions of democracy for the Second United States Democracy Summit.

The Liberian Leader informed the global gathering that Liberia has successfully implemented every commitment made aimed at strengthening and safeguarding democracy at home and abroad.

President Weah told the Summit that his Government continues to deliver on the commitments for media freedom and openness in legislative process, as well as the elimination of harmful traditional practices.

He disclosed that Liberia has been consistent and steadfast on the path of democracy, adding that new laws have been enacted to protect free speech, and the right of freedom to assembly.

At the same time, House Speaker, Dr. Bhofal Chambers, has spoken of the Legislature’s role in promoting sound election policies and voter’s participation.

Speaker Chambers said:” It is incumbent upon the legislative body of any country to ensure the promotion of free, fair and credible election processes, as well as the sustenance of democracy.”

He boasted of Liberia’s preparedness to conduct transparent elections this year, owing to the numerous measures set to ensure unhindered electoral processes.

Speaker Chambers also highlighted the role of the National Legislature in promoting anti-graft initiatives, as well as peace-building, among other things.
