Nat’l Elections Commission Begins Biometric Voter Registration Amid Technical Constraints at Some Places

MONROVIA, LIBERIA-The First Phase of the Biometric the Voter Registration (BVR) has commenced across six of the fifteen counties amid technical constraints at some places.

Some of the VBR Centers in Monrovia and its environs visited by ELBC Reporters included St. Peter Lutheran Church in Sinkor, G.W. Gibson High School on the Bye-Pass and Newport High School in Central Monrovia.

At some of the centers, the National Elections Commission workers spoke of technical problems being experienced, thereby delaying the start of the exercise.

The VBR exercise of Phase One is covering Grand Bassa, Grand Cape Mount, Gbarpolu, Bomi, Margibi and Montserrado Counties.

At the same time, NEC Chairperson, Davidetta Browne-Lansanah, is appealing to owners of NEC designated registration centers to make their premises available for the exercise.

Madam Browne-Lansanah told ELBC on Monday, March 20, 2023, that some property owners, mainly in Monrovia, are refusing to allow NEC Staffers use their designated premises to carry out the registration process.

They are claiming that NEC did not meet with them to make arrangements before the exercise.

The Head of NEC fears the action of those refusing to comply could rule out the success of the electoral process and likely to alter the already set calendar for the October 10 Elections.

Madam Browne-Lansanah is, however, urging citizens to turn out for the ongoing voter registration exercise.
