Liberia to Take Part in Regional Maritime Survey…..

MONROVIA, LIBERIA-Liberia is expected to take part in a regional maritime survey of West African Countries, led by Moroccan Research Vessel.

The National Fisheries and Aquaculture Authority (NaFAA) said the survey will, among other things, determine the type of fish species that are found in Liberian waters.

NaFAA Director General, Emma Glassco, made the disclosure on Monday, February 27, 2023, in an ELBC interview.

Madam Glassco said:” The comprehensive survey will allow Liberia to transition from dormant small-scale fishing program to industrial fishing.”

Liberia was lined up for the survey because of its membership with the inter-governmental organization of African Countries Bordering the Atlantic Ocean.

According to Madam Glassco, the exercise will put Liberia in a better position to properly regulate its fishing industry, in accordance with European Union standards.

At the same time the NaFAA Boss says steps are being taken by Liberia to have the yellow card restriction placed on the Country’s fishery sector to be lifted.

Madam Glassco said currently NaFAA is engaging the European Union (EU) to have the yellow card on Liberia’s fishery lifted in March of this year.

She said lifting the restriction will be a bigger boost to the Country’s fishery industry, meaning that Liberia can begin applying to have assets to European markets.

The NaFAA Director General sad her administration inherited the yellow card restriction, because Liberia failed to do due diligence and registered a ship that was blacklisted by the world.
