“My administration continues to provide strong leadership on climate change mitigation”-Pres. Weah

MONROVIA, LIBERIA-President George Weah has told the ongoing Forest and Climate Resilience Forum that his administration continues to provide strong leadership on climate change mitigation.

According President Weah, for the first time since 2006, his government in 2021 prepared a State of the Environment Report and a National Environment Action Plan.

The Liberian Leader expressed the hope that such report will inform development policy and investment decisions in key sectors.

President Weah also mentioned a comprehensive Land Rights Act, which harmonizes strongly with other existing natural resource laws.

He acknowledged that Liberia has the largest portion of the remaining Upper Guinea Forest, and recognized for being among some the biodiversity hotspots in the world.

Meanwhile, President George Weah has disclosed that his administration is currently creating New Protected Areas to expand the Country’s already existing protected area network.

President Weah said:” This is crucial to enable the Liberian Government meet its targets under national and international conservation commitments and such move will boost the potential for ecotourism and create more jobs for the people.”

President Weah added that government is also developing the capacities of communities to manage their forests, including land-use planning and formalization.

He said government is revising policies and making laws and regulations for commercial forestry to be more sustainable.
