Youth Champions for Menstrual Hygiene petitions Gov’t to…..

MONROVIA, LIBERIA-A group of young people under the banner, Youth Champions for Menstrual Hygiene, has petitioned the Liberian Government to take action to improve menstrual health in the Country.

The group’s petition was presented to the Women Legislative Caucus and the WASH Legislative Caucus.

The Group is, among other things, calling for the removal of the ten-percent GST and all taxes on sanitary pads imported and manufactured in Liberia.

The Group also wants an annual budgetary allotment for provision of improved WASH facilities with menstrual changing rooms in schools.

The petition was presented Tuesday, September 21, 2022, at a one-day Regional Youth Workshop and Advocacy meeting with the Women Legislation Caucus held at a local hotel in Monrovia.

Receiving the petition, Montserrado County Representative, Rustolyn Dennis, assured that the request will reach the Legislature, but also encouraged the group to engage the Executive.

The program was organized by WaterAid and its civil society partners, and brought together youth advocates of menstrual hygiene from Liberia, Burkina Faso and Sierra Leone.
