Supreme Court begins its March Term Today

MONROVIA, LIBERIA-The Supreme Court of Liberia is expected to resume legal business today, Monday, March 14, 2022, as provided for by Chapter 2, Section 2.5 of the Judicial Law of Liberia.

The law states: “The Supreme Court shall hold two terms annually, commencing on the Second Monday of October and the Second Monday of March and continuing as long as the business before the court may require.”

It further states: “They shall be known as the October and March Terms respectively.”

ELBC Judicial Reporter said Monday’s opening will be characterized with emotional feeling, as the event will be Chief Justice Francis Korkpor’s last opening occasion.

Justice Korkpor will retire from the Supreme Court of Liberia on September 5, 2022, consistent with Article 72(b) of the Liberian Constitution, and will not be available for the Court’s October Term.

Article 72 (b) states: ‘The Chief Justice and Associate Justices of the Supreme Court and judges of the Subordinate Courts of records shall be retired at age seventy”.

President George Weah, along with several officials of Government and members of the Diplomatic Code, are expected to grace Monday’s opening of the Supreme Court at the Temple of Justice.

In another development, prose cuting lawyers have responded to a motion filed by defense lawyers seeking the dismissal of criminal indictment against National Elections Commission  (NEC) Chairperson Davidetta Browne-Lansanah.

In a fifteen count response,the Prosecution argued that insider trading and market manipulation was enacted into law, thereby criminalizing it.

The Prosecution claimed that the NEC Chair awareded a contract to a company operated by her brothers, Dav id Browne and Arnold Badio, in complete violation of the Code of Conduct.

The Prosecuting lawyers then prayed the court to deny and dismiss the motion filed by the legal team representing Madam Davidetta Browne-Lanasnah.

Madam Browne-Lansanah has been indicted by Crminal  Court “C’ for alleged economic sabotage, insider trading and market manipulation.
