US Ambassador wants Gov’t step up efforts to curb power theft

MONROVIA, LIBERIA – United States Ambassador Michael McCarthy wants the Government of Liberia stamp out efforts aimed at curbing power theft in the country.

Ambassador McCarthy also called on the government to ensure prosecution and substantial sentences for those involved in power theft, no matter how important they may be.

He said:” The US Government has invested heavily in the Liberian Energy Sector, and it is incumbent upon government to protect those investments.”

The US Envoy said they have been told through multiple sources that there is a well-organized electricity theft cartel, that benefits well connected businesses and public officials.

Ambassador McCarthy spoke Thursday, August 26, 2021, at a press conference, following a visit to the Bushrod Island Plant of the Liberia Electricity Corporation (LEC).
