Intensify work to move Liberia towards a Digital Economy

MONROVIA, LIBERIA-Vice President Jewel Howard-Taylor has stressed the need for relevant Government institutions to intensify work for the Country to move towards a digital economy.

Vice President Taylor said:” The benefits of a digital economy are overwhelming and such development will reduce cost in the long term.”

Her comment comes as relevant Government institutions have begun taking additional steps to synchronize the Country’s identification system.

On Wednesday, April 7, 2021, the Governance Commission organized a daylong National Forum on Identification that brought together the National Identification Registry, the National Elections Commission and the Liberia Institute for Statistics and Geo-Information Services among others.

The Vice President said:” It is important that the conversation on the national identity gets to high schools and universities, as young people make up majority of the Country’s population.”

Meanwhile, the Acting Chairman of the Governance Commission, Elizabeth Duncan, has expressed concern over the fragmentation of citizen’s identification across Government ministries and agencies.

Madam Duncan said the situation remains a challenge.

Speaking at the start of the forum, the Acting Chairman emphasized the need for identification to be synchronized for effectiveness and efficiency.

The forum was held under theme:” Synchronizing ID Systems for a Digital Economy.”
