Agriculture Ministry launches Global Hunger Index, wants Food Security immediately addressed

MONROVIA, LIBERIA-The Ministry of Agriculture has launched the Global Hunger Index in Monrovia, with a call to urgently address the issue of food security.

Speaking at the launch on Wednesday, March 17, 2021, Agriculture Minister Jeanine Cooper said Liberia was adversely affected economically by Ebola the current COVID-19 pandemic, which has also imparted food production.

Minister Cooper said:” There is an urgent need to reverse the current state of the Country’s food security situation, and hunger remains high in Liberia, with undernourishment on the increase since 2010.”

The Agriculture Minister also emphasized the need to curtail malnutrition in the fight against hunger to meet the Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) number two.

Meanwhile, Welt Hunger Hlife Country Director, Hubert Charles, said:” The world cannot achieve the UN SDG’s Number Two on zero hunger by 2030.”

Mr. Charles attributed the impediment to the devastating effects of the Coronavirus pandemic that continue to ravish world economies.

Director Charles called for global efforts to reverse the current trend and improve food security.

He emphasized the critical need for integrated approach to health, environment, agriculture, food and nutrition and security, particularly in Sub-Sahara Africa.
