Nat’l Elections Commission certificates Bomi County Senator-elect

MONROVIA, LIBERIA-The National Elections Commission (NEC) has certificated Bomi County Senator-elect, Edwin Snowe, as winner of the December 8, 2020, Special Senatorial Election in Bomi County.

The certification of Mr. Snowe followed a ruling from the Supreme Court of Liberia, affirming the Board of Commissioners’ earlier declaration of the Bomi County Lawmaker as winner.

Speaking Monday, February 22, 2021, at the certification ceremony in Monrovia, NEC Chairperson, Davidetta Browne-Lansanah said:” Though the Commission announced winners in other counties; they will not be certificated until complaints filed against the process are fully disposed of.”

Remarking during the ceremony, Bomi County Senator Edwin Snowe vowed to serve as an advocate for NEC, to ensure the timely release of needed funds to the Commission to enhance its work.

He thanked the people of Bomi County for the confidence reposed in him, noting that it is time to get the job done.

In a related development, NEC has received a notification from the House of Representatives for a vacancy in the 54th National Legislature.

NEC, in a release issued on Monday, February 22, 2021, said the vacancy was created as a result of the election to the Liberian Senate of Grand Gedeh County former Representative, Zoe Pennue.

The communication dated February 18, 2021, authorized NEC to work out the necessary mechanisms for the holding of a By-Election in Grand Gedeh County.

Article 37 of the Liberian Constitution says in the event of a vacancy in the Legislature caused by death, resignation, expulsion or otherwise, the presiding officer shall within thirty days notify the National Elections Commission of the vacancy.

The NEC is to conduct the Grand Gedeh County By-Election within ninety days, to fill the vacancy within the National Legislature.
