Supreme Court reserves ruling in Prohibition filed against Referendum

MONROVIA, LIBERIA-The Supreme Court has reserved ruling in the prohibition filed against the Referendum slated for December 8, this year.

It followed Tuesday’s legal arguments between lawyers representing the Collaborating Political Parties (CPP) and the National Elections Commission (NEC).

CPP’s Lead Lawyer, Cllr. Benedict Sarnor, argued that there was not sufficient public awareness for the pending Referendum, which is in violation of Article 94 of the Liberian Constitution.

The Constitution calls for one year public awareness, prior to the conduct of any Referendum.

The former Justice Minister said the petition was filed against the NEC to compel legal compliance, and to serve in the supreme interest of the Liberian people.

But in reaction, NEC Lawyer, Cllr. Wilkins Wright, said:” The prohibition against the NEC was not done in good faith, and its intent is counterproductive.”
