Supreme Court denies CPP’s application for alternative writ to clean-up 2017 Voter Roll

MONROVIA, LIBERIA –Justice-In-Chambers of the Supreme Court of Liberia, Sie-A-Nyene-Gyapay Youh, has declined to issue an alternative writ prayed for by the Collaborating Political Parties (CPP).

An Alternative Writ is a writ intended to compel someone or an institution to perform an official duty consistent with the law.

Recently the Unity Party (UP), Alternative National Congress (ANC), Liberty Party (LP), and the All Liberian Party (ALP) of the CPP, filed an application to compel the National Elections Commission to clean-up the 2017 Voter Roll (VR), as a pre-requisite to the conduct of the Mid-Term Senatorial Election.

Justice Nyene-Youh, in her Monday, October 5, 2020, ruling, dismissed the petition proffered by the CPP following legal arguments during Friday, October 2, 2020, conference between lawyers of the CPP and the National Elections Commission.

Prior to the ruling, public debate over the cleaning-up of the 2017 VR, has intensified among political actors and citizens ahead of the Mid-Term Senatorial Polls.
