MONROVIA, LIBERIA-The Coronavirus cases in Liberia continue to rise, with the country recording one-hundred-thirty-four confirmed new cases in the last one week.
Liberian Health Authorities on Monday, June 23, 2020, reported twenty-four new confirmed cases of Coronavirus infection, increasing the Country’s total cases to six-hundred-fifty.
The Incident Management Team’s latest report shows a jump of three-hundred-fifty-six people in treatment, while the death toll stands at thirty-four.
Health workers are currently tracing one thousand- one-hundred-thirty-one.
Meanwhile, Montserrado County, the hardest hit county of the Coronavirus, has recorded fifteen new confirmed cases of Covid-19.
The County has reported five-hundred-forty-two of Liberia’s six-hundred-fifty cases and twenty-one of the thirty-four deaths.
Margibi County followed with thirty-nine cases, Nimba County with eighteen, Bong County seventeen, while Grand Bassa and Gbarpolu Counties have reported ten cases each and Lofa County has five.
At the same time, five Coronavirus related deaths have been reported in the Treatment Unit and fifteen deaths in other health facilities, while fourteen deaths have been recorded in the communities.
Presently, additional six persons have recovered from the Coronavirus infections, bringing the total number of recoveries to two-hundred-sixty.
In the interim, Health authorities in Liberia have threatened to institute punitive actions against health workers found refusing to adhere to health protocols.
Liberia’s Chief Medical Officer, Dr. Francis Kateh, said:” Many health workers confirmed of the virus are reportedly refusing to either isolate themselves or abide by the protocols.”
Speaking with ELBC Tuesday, June 23, 2020, Dr. Kateh disclosed that County Health officers have been alerted to take administrative action against any health worker caught violating the mandate.
He also accused non-health workers confirmed of the virus of refusing to isolate themselves, thereby increasing the spread of the virus.
The Chief Medical Officer, however, attributed the rise in the number of Coronavirus cases to the lack of self-isolation by confirmed persons.
