IWD to Highlight Barriers Women Face in Male Dominated Career Feilds

Monrovia Liberia – The United States Agency for International Development (USAID) in partnership with UN Women, the Embassy of Sweden, Kvinna Kvinna and the International Rescue Committee, will on Wednesday March 4, 2020 observe International Women’s Day (IWD) to celebrate the work of Liberian women breaking barriers in male dominated career fields.

In observance of the day, there will be an inter-generational panel discussion on women in engineering, as well as in the security, energy and media sectors, showcasing the importance of women’s contributions to Liberia’s development.

A US Embassy released Tuesday said the event will be held under the theme, “Liberian Women Breaking Barriers,” and will be an interactive and engaging celebration.

A local muralist has been commissioned to produce a piece of art highlighting the work that Liberian women do every day in support of development.

The final mural, which will be co-designed by participants to the event, will be displayed on a large wall on Airfield Shortcut Road, near the Cachelle Arts Center, to raise awareness about the strides women are making in knocking down barriers that have hampered their participation in national development.

Bong County Representative, Moima Briggs Mensah and USAID/Liberia Deputy Mission Director, Rebekah Eubanks, will attend and give remarks at the program which will also bring together an array of other women, including government officials, members of civil society organizations, and students.

International Women’s Day seeks to promote women, women’s rights, and women’s inclusion.  The theme for this year’s celebrations is “Each for Equal.”

The event will take place at a local Restaurant near the Executive Mansion in Monrovia.
