Independent Civil Society Union condemns ‘Weah Step Down’ Protest

MONROVIA, LIBERIA – A group calling itself the Independent Civil Society Union of Liberia (ICSUL), is reminding the ‘Weah Step Down’ planners and Protesters that the political and economic problems of Liberia require collective efforts of all Liberians and not government alone.

The group said the planned December 30 protest by the Council of Patriots (CoP) to remove President George Manneh Weah from power, as an act of terrorism that must be condemned and resisted by Liberians and its international partners.

The ICSUL, in a release issued Thursday, December 26, 2019 in Monrovia, termed the ‘Weah Step Down’ Protest Planners of the protest, “as democratic losers and agents of chaos and instability, whose sole intent is to destabilize Liberia in their quest to obtain state power through undemocratic means”.

The release also condemned the protest by the Cop and stressed that Liberians have learnt the hard lesson of insurrection and will no longer allow undemocratic means of removing presidents from power.

The Independent Civil Society Group is therefore, urging members of the CoP to explore other available democratic options to present their grievances to Government at this critical junction of the country’s democracy.
