MONROVIA, LIBERIA-President Joseph Boakai is expected to address the General Debate of the 81st United Nations General Assembly in New York later today.
President Boakai’s address is expected to focus on a range of pertinent global and national issues, including Liberia’s role in achieving global peace and security, sustainable development, and climate change, among others.
A dispatch from the U.S. said the Liberian Leader will be the 11th speaker at Thursday morning’s session of the UN General Assembly, joining world leaders for the anticipated general debate.
This year’s high-level week is being held both in person and virtually on the theme:” Restoring Trust, Managing Transformation: A UN That Delivers”.
It highlights the urgency of delivering on the promise of the Sustainable Development Goals and renewing global cooperation, among others.
At the same time, President Boakai has proposed a Liberia-Ghana Cultural Heritage and Historical Recovery Cooperation Framework.
The Liberian Leader wants the two countries to turn their shared commitment to Africa’s history into practical work.
He proposed on Wednesday, September 23, 2026, at a side event co-hosted by Ghana, Germany and France.
Under the proposed framework, Liberian and Ghanaian institutions would work together to digitize historical records, train archivists and museum professionals, research and preserve historical sites, and develop exhibitions and other educational activities.
The partnership would also support efforts to identify cultural materials of African origin and explore their possible return.
President Joseph Boakai said:” Ghana’s experience would be valuable as Liberia advances plans for a Peace, Reconciliation and Memorial Museum”.
