MONROVIA, LIBERIA-Monrovia City Mayor John Siaffa says the city is intensifying efforts to improve sanitation through structured community cleanups and increased attention to beaches and waterways.

Mayor Siaffa said” Monrovia generates approximately 1,250 tons of waste daily, but only a fraction of the waste is currently being properly managed”.

He said the Presidential Clean City Initiative will reinforce the ongoing work of the Monrovia City Corporation, with young people expected to support cleanup activities in communities and public spaces.

According to the Mayor, the city will move away from emergency cleanups toward a more structured community-based approach, targeting approximately four communities each week over the next 90 days.

Mayor Siaffa said residents should expect improvements along Monrovia’s beaches, waterfront areas, and waterways as the city works with communities and young people to address sanitation challenges.

At the same time, Mayor Siaffa said the MCC is introducing a digital system aimed at strengthening waste collection and sanitation services across the city.

He disclosed that more than 13,000 structures have already been registered during the initial enumeration exercise, which seeks to create a database of homes and businesses for improved waste management services.

He added that the MCC has also identified and certified at least twelve small and medium-sized enterprises, mostly Liberian-owned, to support waste collection services in different parts of Monrovia.

According to Siaffa, the companies have acquired more than 36 waste collection vehicles and approximately 57 tricycles, which will be deployed to support door-to-door waste collection.

The mayor called on households and businesses to cooperate with enumerators visiting communities, stressing that the information being collected is intended to help the city build an effective and sustainable waste management system.
